The fifth round of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship, the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya, takes place this weekend as a sequence of six races in the space of eight weekends kicks off.
Current standings leader and reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo heads into Round 5 holding a 12-point advantage at the top of the Championship, and the Yamaha Factory Racing rider has been strong at the circuit in recent years. In 2009 he had a famous battle to the final corner with Valentino Rossi for victory, eventually finishing second, and last season won from pole position. His closest rival in the Championship at present, Casey Stoner, has stood on the podium at the track for the past four seasons and the Repsol Honda rider arrives at Catalunya coming off the back of a victory at Le Mans the 25th premier class win of his career.
Unfortunately, this weekend the Repsol Honda team will compete without Dani Pedrosa, third in the standings. The Spaniard had surgery on May 18 to repair a fractured right collarbone caused during his crash in the Le Mans race. It was hoped that through rehabilitation he would be ready to participate this weekend in the Grand Prix of Catalunya, however, due the bone healing slower than anticipated he has been forced to follow a more conservative treatment. How the injury heals from this point on will determine the timetable for his return to competition.
Third Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso scored his first podium of 2011 at Le Mans and is just three points ahead of fellow Italian Valentino Rossi, whom he held off to take second place in France. Rossi, fresh from his first podium finish with Ducati at the previous round, is the most successful rider at the Catalunya circuit with nine victories to his name there (including six in the premier class).
Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) and Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini) are both closely matched in the standings, while Aoyama's team-mate Marco Simoncelli is on a mission to secure his first premier class podium finish. The Italian, at the centre of controversy following Pedrosa's crash at Le Mans, finished the French GP in fifth position having incurred a Ride Through penalty, and has a 250cc win at Catalunya in his bank of experience.
Monster Yamaha Tech 3 duo Colin Edwards and Cal Crutchlow are level on 21 points with Héctor Barberá (Mapfre Aspar Team), the Brit once again making his debut at a new track, while Yamaha Factory Racing's Ben Spies will aim to break into the top five for the first time this season he placed sixth on his debut at Catalunya last year.
Rookie Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing) continues his development in the premier class, he finished fourth in last year's Moto2 race at Catalunya, while Toni Elías (LCR Honda) and Pramac Racing pair Loris Capirossi and Randy de Puniet will all be looking for improved results. Rizla Suzuki's Álvaro Bautista will ride in what will be his third race of the season, as he continues to work his way back to full fitness following a broken left femur.
Stefan Bradl is the man to catch in the Moto2 class having opened up a 28-point advantage at the top of the Championship after four rounds, and the Viessmann Kiefer Racing rider is in fine form as the 2011 season pushes on with the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya this weekend. The German has won two of the four races in 2011 to date, finishing third at Le Mans in the previous round, and by qualifying in pole position in France became the first rider to take four successive poles in the intermediate category since Jorge Lorenzo did so in 2006.
His closest rival at the moment is Julián Simón, and the Mapfre Aspar rider is hungry for his first Moto2 win. Italian Andrea Iannone (Speed Master) is just a point behind Simón in the standings and after crashing out in France will be steeled for an assault on the podium at Catalunya. Just three points separate Simón in second and Simone Corsi in sixth position in the standings ahead of this weekend. Yuki Takahashi (Gresini Racing) and Thomas Lüthi (Interwetten Paddock Moto2) have each taken two podiums so far this season.
Bankia Aspar rider Nico Terol remains atop of the 125 Championship standings going into Round 5 at Catalunya this weekend, holding a 36-point advantage over the rest of the category, and the Spaniard is yet to finish outside the top two so far this season.

Lets Play A Game
While Mom enjoyed a good scrubbing, I busied myself the way I do most mornings and promptly fell back asleep.
This time not the sleep of the dead, but more like 'Hey it's really cold because it's December and the electricity is out so let's bring that big honkin' BBQ into the house, fill 'er to the the brim with briquettes, and fire that baby up! That'll warm us all toasty and put a healthy glow into the kid's cheeks' kind of sleep.
Wait a sec. . . . ummm . . . I guess that's the sleep of the dead as well.
I don't know if you're aware, but another of Mom's and my favorite games is: If-David-Falls-Back-Asleep-Don't-Wake-Him-Until-It's-Five-Minutes-Before-The-Time-We-Have-To-Leave.
It's not my favorite game, as waking up in a modified panic does funny things to my heart and can cast a pall over my morning, but your mother has grown quite fond of it over the years. I don't share her enthusiasm, but she puts up with quite a bit from me so I allow her these simple pleasures.
I've asked her many, many, many times why she does this to me, to which she replies, "I woke you once. Be an adult and get your keister out of bed."
Silly, silly Mom. I've tried to explain to her that obviously, after all these years she KNOWS I'm going to fall back asleep, so why play this silly charade? Why not just wake me again?
To which she replies that I KNOW she won't wake me again, and I KNOW that I have to get up, so why do I insist on playing this silly charade and just get the hell out of bed?
Oh . . . now I get it! Gah! Well played good woman. I’ve done been bamboozled with me own logic.

From CNW
TORONTO, ON - Canadian Motorsport Ventures Ltd., established by famed Canadian racer Ron Fellows, transportation industry leader, Alan Boughton, and real-estate developer Carlo Fidani, today announced the company's purchase of Mosport International Raceway. Taking over from the Panoz Motor Sports Group, the new owners will build on Mosport's storied history and respected reputation to create new and exciting opportunities for race fans, corporate partners and drivers on an international scale.
Recognized as Canada's Home of Motorsports, Mosport is the country's largest automotive performance and racing facility, and has hosted almost every class of road racing on its famed 3.96km circuit, including Formula 1, IndyCar, sports cars, stock cars, motorcycles and karts. Under the new leadership, Myles Brandt will continue to serve in his role as President and General Manager at the facility.
"We want to thank the Panoz Motor Sports Group for making Mosport what it is today - a world class racing venue that hosts some of North America's best road racing series and a place of inspiration for generations of racers in Canada," said Boughton, Managing Partner, Canadian Motorsport Ventures, Ltd. I am personally very gratified that we have been able to help this crown jewel grow and improve for both racers and fans and I am very happy to now turn it over to a group that loves this place as much as I do. And I want to say a special thank you to Ron Fellows, who has always been a true gentleman, champion and the greatest representative of Canadian racing that I have known. The fact that he is now one of the owners of Mosport is a dream come true for both of us."

McGuiness sets pace at Isle of Man
From the Isle of Man TT
A dry, sunny evening met the competitors for Tuesday evening’s qualifying session and, apart from a stiff a breeze, conditions were almost perfect for the second night of the 2011 Isle of Man TT Races fuelled by Monster Energy.
After a 10-minute delay, the riders were out at 6:30pm and Michael Dunlop and Guy Martin who, as on Monday, were the first to leave the line, Martin on the Superbike and Dunlop on the Supersport machine. Cameron Donald and Gary Johnson were the next pairing to go, swiftly followed by Ryan Farquhar, Bruce Anstey, Keith Amor and Dan Stewart. All were Superbike mounted as was Adrian Archibald, out for the first time on a brand new ZX-10R Kawasaki. Fifteen-time race winner John McGuinness was in the eighth pairing away.
Johnson was the first man back at 127.71mph just ahead of Martin at 126.325mph, followed by Donald at 125.05 and Anstey at 126.24. Amor and Stewart were slightly slower at 125.9mph and 125.8mph while McGuinness moved up to second quickest on 126.975mph.
Meanwhile, Dunlop was the fastest 600 with a lap of 123.59mph followed by James Hillier on 118.415mph and Luis Carreira on 118.402. Conor Cummins was also improving steadily, breaking the 120mph at 120.203mph. McGuinness clocked the quickest time through the Sulby speed trap at 190.6mph
Johnson pulled in and switched to his 600 with Donald doing likewise to the Superstock bike but many of the other riders went straight through, keen to get two early laps in on the Superbike. Martin increased his speed to 128.261mph but McGuinness followed him in at 129.041mph. Dunlop increased his 600cc lap speed to 125.464mph with both Hillier and Carreira in the 119mph bracket but Davy Morgan stopped at the Mountain Box, Conor Cummins at Greeba Castle and Michael Rutter at Quarter Bridge although the latter was able to proceed.
Donald briefly went quickest in the Superstock class with a lap of 124.447mph as McGuinness reported track conditions to be good except for a slightly dusty road at Ramsey. His only concern was leathers that were too tight but he was soon back out on the circuit, this time on his Padgetts Superstock Honda.
Michael Dunlop then topped the Superstock class with a lap at 126.26mph while Johnson went quickest through the speed trap at 192.3mph. Rutter’s adjustments also paid dividends as he put in a lap of 124.143mph but Farquhar was out at Kerromoar.
Most of the main contenders were able to complete five laps during the session with Donald putting in a late flyer of 128.08mph on his Superbike.
